Senior cornerback Brandon Brinkley has been honored as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Mississippi State on Saturday.

The Bay City, Texas native finished the game with two interceptions, three pass breakups and seven solo tackles. His interceptions total is a new best for Brinkley while he matched his pass breakups record.

Brinkley's interceptions came at very opportune times. During the second quarter with the score tied, Brinkley picked off a MSU pass at the Cougars 13-yard line. Then in the fourth quarter with the score tied again, Brinkley picked off another pass - this time at the Cougar one-yard line.

This is the third time a Houston player has won the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week this season. Senior cornerback Jamal Robinson was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week after Houston's victory over Oklahoma State and sophomore defensive tackle David Hunter took home the honor after the Cougars topped Texas Tech. Junior quarterback Case Keenum has been selected as the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week twice. The Cougars have combined to earn five C-USA Players of the Week. SMU and Tulsa are the only other conference teams to receive a Player of the Week accolade more than twice, tallying three awards each.

Memphis senior running back Curtis Steele was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week and SMU freshman defensive end Margus Hunt earned C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week for their efforts this week.

In addition to being named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, Brinkley was a College Football Performance Award Defensive Back Honorable Mention.

For the second week in a row, James Cleveland was a CFPA Wide Receiver Honorable Mention. The junior had 11-catches, 131-yards and two touchdowns in his efforts against MSU. Cleveland ranks fifth in the nation in receptions per game (8.2) despite only making two catches in the Cougars opener over Northwestern State University.

Over the past three games, Cleveland has caught 33 receptions for 357 yards and five touchdowns.

The Cougars travel to New Orleans on Saturday, Oct. 17 to face Tulane in the Louisiana Superdome. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 pm and will be televised live by CBS College Sports. The game also can be heard on 790 The Sports Animal.
