Leone Named Ray Guy Award Player of the Week

HOUSTON – Houston’s Richie Leone has been named the Ray Guy Award Player of the Week the August Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award announced Monday.
A two-time Ray Guy Award semifinalist, Leone had six punts with a total of 282 yards, averaging 47 yards per punt in Houston’s 25-15 win over Memphis. Four of Leone’s punts were marked inside the 20-yard line, including one inside the 10-yard line, with one touchback. Leone’s net average was 44 yards per punt and his longest punt was 58 yards.
Leone’s high, hanging kicks helped to hold Memphis to just one punt return for a loss of two yards as Memphis punt returners were forced to call three fair catches.
Leone has helped UH to lead the nation in punt return defense, holding opponents to a loss of 2.25 yards per return. The senior also connected on his lone field goal attempt of the day, a 24-yard kick, and hit five kickoffs for an average of 64.2 yards per kick and one touchback to limit Memphis to an average of 24 yards per kick return.
The Augusta Sports Council presents the Ray Guy Award, given to the collegiate punter of the year at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on EPSN in Orlando, Fla. The Ray Guy Award Preseason Watch List was announced on July 10, 2013 with nominations open until Oct. 21, 2013.
