SMU kneels out the clock and takes the win over Houston 72-42.
10:45 p.m.
Ninth-turnover of the game for UH. Pick 6. 45 points off turnovers.
10:36 p.m.
38 points off turnovers for SMU tonight - 21 direct points from those TO's. SMU makes it 66-42 with the last Line touchdown.
10:24 p.m.
D.J. Hayden adds the game's fourth non-offensive touchdown with a 76-yard interception return. Second pick of the career for the senior.
10:17 p.m.
Houston goes for it on fourth-and-10 at midfield and Charles Sims takes a swing pass 49 yards for a touchdown. His fourth score of the night.
10:01 p.m.
SMU's QB Garrett Gilbert evades the rush and finds a receiver open downfield for a 42-yard touchdown strike to stretch the lead to 52-28. Houston had the momentum and 14-straight points. Crawford Jones follows with the Cougars eighth turnover of the night and SMU capitilizes.
10:00 p.m.
9:55 p.m.
Cougars fighting back. Crawford leads Houston on an eight-play, 80-yard drive in 2:03. Daniel Spencer with the seven-yard TD catch - had three catches for 70 yards and three first downs on that drive.
9:40 p.m.
Crawford Jones passes to Charles Sims coming out of the backfield for a 24-yard touchdown pass. Third touchdown of the night for Sims, third time in his career he has done three touchdowns in a game. Also the fourth time he has had a rushing and receiving touchdown.
9:29 p.m.
Third non-offensive score as Bram Kohlhausen throws a pick six - returned 10 yards for the score to put SMU up 45-14.
9:21 p.m.
SMU adds a field goal off another UH turnover.
9:16 p.m.
Just got word David Piland will not return tonight. Ball is in Bram's hands now.
9:12 p.m.
Turnovers killing Houston - Ryan Jackson fumbles the opening second-half kickoff and SMU returns it for a touchdown. Second non-offensive touchdown for SMU tonight although Houston fans will argue all scores on the Cougars are offensive.
8:49 p.m.
First half stats...UH outgaining and has more plays than SMU (48-238 to 33-185) but the Ponies winning the turnover battle. SMU has scored 14 points off three Houston first-half turnovers. SMU has turned the ball over once.
8:49 p.m.
Rough end to the half for Piland - comes out the game and heads to the locker room a little early for evaluations. Richie Leone ends the half on a positive note by booming a 63-yard punt.
8:40 p.m.
Pick six for SMU doubles - Piland never saw the LB dropping underneathe the route. Just over a minute remaining in the first half.
8:36 p.m.
On third and long, SMU picks up an 18-yard touchdown pitch and catch to pull ahead.
8:21 p.m.
David Piland's helment comes off on a second-down play and he has to sit out a play. Crawford Jones comes in but unable to pick up the first down.
43-yard punt by Richie Leone, pins SMU at their own eight. 8:21 p.m.
Four-straight three-and-outs forced by the UH defense. SMU has gained two yards on the last four drives in 10 plays.
8:11 p.m.
David Piland uses his legs (and head) to pick up a big third-and-9 from the UH 33 - pulls the ball down and scampers for 21 yards. Picks up eight more yards on another third down play later in the drive to make it a manageable fourth-and-2. UH picks up the first down and keeps the drive alive.
8:01 p.m.
Charles Sims punches it in from two-yards out. His third multiple-touchdown game of the year, ninth of his career. Evens up the score at 14.
Touchdown runs from one and two yards out tonight. 7:54 p.m.
End of the first quarter. Houston survives three first quarter turnovers with only a touchdown deficit. David Piland just hung in the pocket and took a shot - but delivered a first-down pass to Greenberry. UH ball on the SMU 2.
7:49 p.m.
And again the Cougars defense comes up huge - defensive coordinator Jamie Bryant dials up a blitz and Phillip Steward tips the ball as he comes in on the rush. Joey Mbu makes his first career interception - big man even returned it for a few yards.
7:48 p.m.
Defense picks up the offense after the turnover, but another turnover on the punt.
7:45 p.m.
Daniel Spencer lets the ball bounce off his hands and an SMU safety snags the interception out of the air. SMU ball on their own 44.
7:36 p.m.
Zach Line bounces off a tackle and runs in 12 yards for a score.
7:30 p.m.
With the first touchdown, Charles Sims moves into a tie with Paul Gipson (1966-68) for fifth most rushing touchdowns in school history - 25.
7:25 p.m.
Houston answers with an impressive 11-plya, 75-yard drive to even the score at 7-7.
Third-straight game with opening drive touchdown for UH. 7:16 p.m.
SMU throws a pass to the back corner of the end zone and gains seven points on the UH turnover.
7:13 p.m.
Houston forces a three-and-out but Dewayne Peace muffs the punt. SMU ball on the UH 11.
7:07 p.m.
SMU wins the toss, Houston will kick and defend the North end zone.
