HOUSTON –Houston’s Richie Leone was named the Ray Guy Award Player of the Week for the second consecutive week the August Sports Council and the Ray Guy Award announced Monday.

One week after earning the award for his role in Houston’s win over Memphis, Leone recorded his best single-game punting average this season as he hit eight punts for an average of 47.9 yards per punt in Houston’s 47-46 loss to BYU. Three of Leone’s punts traveled over 50 yards including a season-best 61-yard punt.

Four of Leone’s eight punts landed inside the BYU 20-yard line including three inside the 10-yard line and one on the BYU three-yard line. Leone’s final punt of the third quarter pinned BYU at its own nine-yard line. On the ensuing drive, back-to-back sacks from Derrick Mathews gave Houston its first safety of the year.

Leone’s high punts resulted in three returns from BYU for a loss of four yards while also forcing returners to call two fair catches.

With Leone at the helm, Houston’s punt team ranks first nationally in punt return defense, forcing a loss of 1.86 yards per return, and fourth nationally in net punting at 41.9 yards per punt. Leone has placed 14 of his 30 punts this season inside opponents’ 20-yard line, including seven inside the 10, with just two touchbacks.
