Houston, Texas - Houston quarterback Case Keenum earned a pair of national player of the week accolades on Tuesday, being named the country's top quarterback by the College Football Performance Awards and the National Offensive Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
Keenum was incredibly efficient during Houston's 63-28 victory over Marshall last Saturday at Robertson Stadium, completing 24-of-28 passes for 376 yards, six passing TDs and no interceptions. The Abilene, Texas, native connected on a 30-yard pass to senior Justin Johnson in the first quarter to break former Hawaii quarterback Timmy Chang's all-time total offense record of 16,910 yards. Keenum now has 17,173 career yards, No. 1 all-time in college football FBS.
The nation's leading passer, Keenum also broke Dan Lefevour's (Central Michigan) total touchdowns accounted for mark. His six TDs vs. the Thundering Herd give him 150 for his career, bettering Lefevour's NCAA career record of 149 TDs accounted for. Keenum has 130 career scoring throws and 20 career rushing touchdowns.
He is just one touchdown behind former Hawaii QB Colt Brennan (131) for second on the NCAA's all-time TD passes list and four from tying former Texas Tech star Graham Harrell (134) for the all-time record. He also needs just 801 yards passing to break Chang's NCAA career passing yardage mark.
Nationally, Keenum is second-to-none passing the football in 2011. He leads the country in total offense (389.3) and captains the country's top passing (441.7), scoring (49.3) and total yardage group (606.1).
Houston returns to action at Robertson Stadium when it hosts Rice on Oct. 27 (Thursday) in the 2011 Bayou Bucket Classic. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now, and can be ordered by calling the UH Athletics Ticket Office at 713-GO-COOGS or by ordering online at UHCougars.com.
