HOUSTON -Houston’s John O’Korn was named one of eight Stars of the Week by the Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, on Monday. The true freshman received the honor after helping lead Houston to a 49-14 American Athletic Conference win at Rutgers Saturday.
Fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. When voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. CST, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Player of the Week.
O’Korn connected on 80 percent of his passes (24-of-30) for a career-high 364 yards and a career high five touchdowns in the UH win.
O’Korn now has at least three passing touchdowns in five games this season and leads all true freshmen nationally with 19 passing touchdowns and in passing efficiency with a rating of 159.0. O’Korn’s 19 touchdowns in seven games is second in The American behind the 23 thrown by Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater in eight games. He has eclipsed the 300-yard mark in three game this season.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
O’Korn and the rest of the Cougars return to action Thursday night at 6 p.m. as they host USF at Reliant Stadium in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPN.
