Oct. 30, 2009
GAME 8 GameDay Central | Promotions | Vote for Case Keenum
GAME NOTES
This will be the first time that the Cougars have faced Southern Miss since the 2006 Conference USA Championship game in Houston. Winners of their last three games, the Cougars (6-1 2-1 C-USA West) enter this weekend's contest on the heels of a 38-15 win against C-USA rival SMU in Houston a week ago. With that win, the Cougars moved into a four-way tie atop the West standings with Tulsa, SMU and UTEP. Junior quarterback Case Keenum leads the Cougar offense with 2,734 yards and 20 touchdowns and only four interceptions this season. Although he saw his streak of 300-yard passing games snapped at SMU, he remains the national leader in passing yards and total offense yards per game. Junior wideout James Cleveland leads six receivers with at least 20 catches this season, totaling 49 receptions and six touchdowns. Sophomore Tyron Carrier leads the team with 511 receiving yards, but sophomore Patrick Edwards is a close second with 503 yards through the air. Sophomore running back Bryce Beall leads the Cougar rushing attack with 498 yards and six touchdowns on 103 carries. Freshman running back Charles Sims ranks second on the team with 252 yards and three touchdowns and tops all backs with 5.4 yards per rush. Sophomore linebacker Marcus McGraw tops the Cougars with 75 tackles and has added two sacks and four pass breakups. Senior linebacker C.J. Cavness ranks second on the squad with 72 tackles and five pass breakups and was recently honored as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week after posting a career-high 18 tackles against SMU. Senior cornerback Brandon Brinkley and junior cornerback Jamal Robinson are tied for the team lead with two interceptions apiece.
Senior running back Damion Fletcher leads the offense with 598 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 128 carries, while senior Tory Harrison has added 460 yards and five touchdowns on only 62 attempts. Junior quarterback Martevious Young leads the team with 527 yards and three touchdowns on 48-of-72 passing. Sophomore DeAndre Brown leads all wideouts with 27 catches for 376 yards and four touchdowns with three other receivers hauling in two scores apiece. Defensively, sophomore linebacker Korey Williams leads the team with 78 tackles, five sacks and a pair of forced fumbles, while senior free safety Eddie Hicks is tops with four interceptions.
In addition, fans can watch the game live on CSS (Comcast channel 129) with Matt Stewart calling the play-by-play action, Chuck Oliver serving as analyst and Allison Williams on the sideline.
In the most recent meeting, the Cougars rallied from a halftime deficit to take a 34-20 win during the 2006 Conference USA Championship game. It was the second meeting during the 2006 season as Southern Miss claimed a 31-27 win in Hattiesburg, Miss., during the regular season.
