When Houston receiver Shane Ros tore his ACL last spring, he knew he wouldn't be able to play this fall. That didn't change Ros' influence with the team, however, as he remains a constant presence around practice and Houston games, home and away. While he's around the program, Ros will provide an inside look and player's perspective of the program to UHCougars.com.

It was a beautiful day in Piscataway, New Jersey as the Houston Cougars took on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. This road contest marked the Cougars third American contest of the season and offered an opportunity to remain undefeated and in the lead in conference play.

New Jersey is the furthest we will travel this year and for many of the Cougars the trip was the furthest they have ever been from home. Going on the road is always a challenge and this trip was no different. We were stepping into an electric atmosphere and into a place with a lot of tradition. Rutgers happens to be the birthplace of college football. On Nov. 6, 1869, the Scarlet Knights won a 6-4 contest over Princeton in the first ever intercollegiate game. All of this made for an exciting Saturday and the Cougars were up for the challenge.

One of the keys to playing on the road is taking the crowd out of the game. The best way to do this is by making plays. Nothing sucks the energy out of the crowd like a big pass on third down or a key turnover in the red zone. On Saturday the Cougars had both and more in a game where starting fast was crucial. It was a complete team performance that featured a ball-hawking defense that forced six turnovers and an explosive offense that took great care of the ball. I don’t know the exact stats but I’d bet that winning the turnover battle 6-0 usually results in a win.

The victory improved the Cougars' conference mark to 3-0 and their overall record to 6-1. Even though the six wins has already eclipsed our win total from a season ago the Cougars are far from satisfied. This team has goals much loftier than just making a bowl game and all of those goals are still there for the taking.

This week's contest against USF is a tough one and Thursday night games can be tricky. With a short week to prepare, the Cougars will need to spend a little more time in the film room in order to make up for lost time. There’s a rumor going around that the boys from the Tre’ will be sporting new duds for this one and I heard they’re pretty slick. So come out to Reliant on Thursday night and support your Coogs.

    Paint Houston Red............and black!

    Go Coogs!
