Though Tuesday is usually one of the more involved practices because it is the first day back to drills in head coach Dana Dimel's system, Halloween proved to be more of a treat than a trick for the University of Houston football team. Tuesday's practice ended earlier than usual, lasting one hour and 50 minutes.

Dimel was merely proving an earlier statement that good practices don't have to be long. The execution and intensity just has to be to his satisfaction. After battling No. 14-ranked Southern Miss to a final score of 6-3 last week, UH emotions remain high. All that was missing Tuesday were the costumes and candy.

"It was pretty spirited," Dimel quipped. "Really, it was a very good day and I hope we have a lot more just like them. I think today's practice was a result of what we did Saturday, playing toe-to-toe with the No. 14-ranked team in the country for four quarters and having a chance to win that game. We learned a lot about ourselves and what we're capable of accomplishing. We practiced with a lot of confidence today and we've just got to channel that into another solid performance against Tulane on Saturday.

"Today great all around," Dimel added. "It also felt pretty good to be on the practice field for the first time on Halloween day and be able to wear shorts and a short-sleeve shirt -- and not have to be bundled-up! That's a little different experience for me after coaching three years in Laramie, Wyoming."

Another unique experience is that Houston will be playing Saturday in a domed stadium. The Cougars face Tulane at 5:00 p.m. in the Super Dome in New Orleans. Though long-associated with home games in the Astrodome for three decades, only a handful of the Cougar seniors were around for UH's last season in the Astrodome in 1997.

In other Cougar football news, the kick-off time for UH's game at East Carolina on November 11, has been officially slated for 11:00 a.m. Houston-time. The game with the Pirates will be televised live by Fox Sports Net.

There is no television for Saturday's game at Tulane. It will be broadcast on the radio in the Houston area on KBME (790 AM).
