HOUSTON - Despite a disappointing loss, the University of Houston football team remained ranked in both national polls and the Bowl Championship Series standings on Sunday.

The Cougars (8-2 * 4-2 C-USA West) fell to No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, racking up 212 points to rank behind No. 21 USC and ahead of No. 23 Utah.

In the latest Associated Press poll, the Cougars dropped to No. 24 with 149 points, behind No. 23 Utah and ahead of No. 25 Rutgers.

This also marked the eighth week that the Cougars have been ranked during the 2009 regular season, the most since 1990.

The Cougars stood at No. 24 in the latest BCS standings with an average of .1150. Houston stood behind No. 23 Clemson and ahead of No. 25 California.

RECENT ACTION
The Cougars dropped a 37-32 decision at Conference USA-rival UCF on Saturday in Orlando. Junior quarterback Case Keenum threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns on 33-of-56 passing with sophomore wide receiver Tyron Carrier snaring nine catches for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

However, it would not be enough as the Cougars saw their season-best five-game winning streak end.

With the loss, Houston fell into second place in the C-USA West Division, one game behind SMU, which stood at 5-1 in league play. The Mustangs close out their regular season at Marshall (3:30 p.m., Nov. 21) and against Tulane (2 p.m., Nov. 28).

The Cougars claimed a 38-15 win against SMU in Houston on Oct. 24.

UP NEXT
The Cougars begin their final two-game stretch at home when they play host to Conference USA-rival Memphis, at noon, Saturday, on John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.

From there, the team plays host to league- and crosstown-rival Rice at 7 p.m., Nov. 28, at Robertson Stadium

ABOUT THE BCS
The Harris Interactive Poll, USA Today Coaches Poll and computer rankings each comprise one-third of the BCS Standings. To derive the three percentages, each team is assigned an inverse point total (25 for No. 1, 24 for No. 2 etc.). The two poll percentages are calculated by dividing each team's point total by a maximum of 2,850 possible points (Harris) and 1,475 points (USA Today).

The computer rankings percentage is calculated by dropping the highest and lowest ranking for each team and then dividing the remaining total by 100 (the maximum possible points).

The BCS Average is calculated by averaging the percentage totals of the Harris Interactive Poll, USA Today Poll and computer rankings.

The team's BCS Averages are ranked to produce the BCS Standings.
