The University of Houston has announced three players who are being recognized by the College Football Performance Awards for their performances following Saturday's loss to UCF. Junior Devin Mays was honored as National Kickoff Returner of the Week while sophomore linebacker Marcus McGraw and sophomore wide receiver Tyron Carrier both picked up Honorable Mention accolades.
Mays kickoff return in the second quarter helped propel the Cougars to their biggest lead of the game. This is the third kick return for a touchdown (Carrier versus Tulsa and SMU) for the Cougars on the season which is the second most in college football. The 100-yard kickoff return by Mays is tied with 12 other players for the longest play of the year (11 kickoff returns, 1 interception return).
McGraw paced the Cougar defense with 14 total tackles, two sacks and three tackles for a loss. Both sacks forced UCF into third-and-long situations where they were unable to convert. This is the second CFPA Honorable Mention for McGraw this year.
Carrier set a career-high in receiving yards with 149 yards on nine catches and two scores. Carrier is part of the only trio of receivers in college football to average over 80 yards per game (James Cleveland 94.1, Carrier 80.1, Patrick Edwards 80.0). This is the third time Carrier has been honored by the CFPA, but his first as a wide receiver. His previous two awards were for Kick Returner Performer of the Week.
