Houston, Texas - A school-record 12 wins and the program's highest-ever Bowl Championship Series ranking helped University of Houston head football coach Kevin Sumlin claim Region 5 Coach of the Year honors from the American Football Coaches Association on Tuesday.

Sumlin was one of just five Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches honored by the national organization today, joining Dabo Swinney (Clemson), Les Miles (LSU), Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State) and David Shaw (Stanford).

It's the first career AFCA regional honor for Sumlin, and in fact, it was the first AFCA regional award for all-five F.B.S. head coaches honored this morning.

Sumlin led UH to those 12 wins in 2011 and has the Cougars returning to postseason action with a Jan. 2 contest against Penn State University at the 2012 TicketCity Bowl in Dallas. Houston led the nation in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense once again under Sumlin, marking the second time the Cougars have led the nation in all three categories under the fourth-year head coach.

Houston opened the year with 12 consecutive victories and reached No. 6 in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Senior quarterback Case Keenum broke NCAA career records for passing yardage, total offense, touchdown passes, total touchdowns, completions and 300-yard passing games, while Patrick Edwards was one of the country's most explosive receivers, catching 79 passes for 1,524 yards and an NCAA-best 18 scores. Edwards and fellow senior Justin Johnson each topped the 1,000-yard receiving mark in 2011 and Edwards and Johnson combined for an NCAA-best 29 TD receptions.

Houston also showed marked improvement defensively this season and were among the Top 10 most improved defenses in America (scoring defense) in 2011.

AFCA National Coach of the Year: The AFCA will announce its five 2011 National Coach of the Year winners at the 2011 AFCA Convention in San Antonio, Texas. All head coaches who were eligible for regional honors are eligible for national honors as well.
