HOUSTON - The University of Houston set its 2013 non-conference opponents while the Big East Conference announced Tuesday cross-divisional opponents and home/away designations for the 2013 football season. Dates and times will be released at a later date.
In non-conference action, Houston will host BYU and Southern, travel to UTSA and face crosstown rival Rice for the Bayou Bucket at Reliant Stadium.
In its first season in the Big East, Houston will welcome Memphis, San Diego State, SMU and USF to the nation's fourth-largest city while traveling to Boise State, Temple, UCF and Rutgers.
Houston will play in three of the nation's seven-largest cities in Houston, Philadelphia (Temple) and San Antonio (UTSA) while playing within 40 miles of America's largest city, New York City, when it visits Rutgers.
Houston will host one cross-divisional opponent, USF, while traveling to face two others in UCF and Rutgers. Memphis, San Diego State, SMU, Boise State and Temple join Houston in the west division of the Big East.
It will be a first-time Cougar battle as BYU and Houston have never faced each other while UH's trip to San Antonio will also mark the first time the two teams have faced off. Houston defeated Southern, 55-3, in the only previous meeting between the two teams on August 30, 2008. The Cougars own a record of 18-9-1 against Rice including wins in the last seven meetings.
Houston owns a combined record of 33-23-1 against six of its eight 2013 Big East opponents. The Cougars have never faced Boise State or Rutgers. Houston owns winning records against Memphis (11-9), San Diego State (2-0), SMU (17-10-1) and Temple (2-0). The Cougars are 0-2 vs. USF and 1-2 vs. UCF.
