Sports Information Assistance
The University of Houston Sports Information Office is at your service to assist you with your coverage of Cougar Football. UH Sports Information Director (SID) Chris Burkhalter and assistants Jeff Conrad, Adam Quisenberry and Jamie Zarda will be happy to serve you during the 2008 season. For information regarding credentials, team and player information, interviews, statistics, travel plans, pictures, video highlights, press conferences and satellite feeds, please call the UH SID Office (713-743-9404).
To assist you during the season, please take time to read the media information found on the next three pages. Brief interviews must be arranged through the sports information office one day in advance.
Photographers and videographers are allowed to shoot during practice at Coach Levine's discretion. Please contact the Sports Information Office for the exact time and place of each days practice.
Sports Information Office
The University of Houston Sports Information Office is in the Ted Nance Suite (#2008) on the second floor of the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Athletics/Alumni Center is located on Cullen Boulevard between Cougar Field and Hofheinz Pavilion. If available, parking will be provided in the front lot of the Athletics/Alumni Center.
John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium is located on Cullen Boulevard between Holman and Wheeler streets. To reach it from Bush Intercontinental Airport, take Highway 59 South through downtown until the Interstate 45 exchange. Take I 45 South (Galveston) and proceed for about one mile. Take the Cullen Exit and stay on the feeder road to the light. Take a right on Cullen and proceed into the University. The stadium is approximately 3/4 of a mile on your right-hand side. To reach it from Hobby Airport, take Airport Drive to Interstate 45. Take I-45 North (toward downtown). Exit Cullen Blvd/Elgin St. and go through the first light until you reach Cullen Blvd. Take a left and follow the same directions above.
All requests for working press, radio, television, photography or scouting credentials should be mailed or faxed on letterhead to Associate Athletics Director Chris Burkhalter at least one week prior to the game. Season credential requests should be sent at least two weeks prior to the first game. Seating in the press box at Robertson Stadium is for working media and scouts only.
All space for the working press, radio and television is allocated by the UH Sports Information Office, which reserves the right to deny credentials to any outlet. Freelance and/or non-daily writers may be asked to produce copies of actual publications in which their work has appeared. Admission to the press box is by pass only.
Requests for press credentials are screened with care due to the demand for credentials and to ensure a working press box. Traditional print, television and radio (media agency) regularly assigned to cover the University of Houston and the visiting school will receive first priority, as well as national news-gathering agencies. Credentials for Internet sites will be granted to University of Houston-operated Web sites, the visiting team¹s official Web site and Conference USA's official Web site. Requests should be made in writing on company letterhead at least 10 days prior to the game to guarantee consideration. Requests should be directed to Chris Burkhalter, Associate A.D./Communications. Requests the week of the game will be honored on a space-available basis and will be left at the Will Call window at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium if they cannot be mailed.
Spouses, dates, children, equipment carriers and non-workers are restricted from the press box, sidelines and locker rooms. Any abuse of a working credential will result in the media agency losing credential privileges.
In some instances due to space limitations, meeting the criteria identified below does not guarantee credentials for every game.
* Only full-time, salaried employees intending to provide actual game coverage may receive credentials.
* A requesting media agency must represent a collective, organizational editorial voice, not simply the offerings of a single individual.
* Membership in a writer's association does not automatically qualify an agency for credentials.
* A media agency may assign one of its credentials to its on-line entity.
* An on-line entity, not associated with a traditional media agency, may qualify for one credential, subject to the following conditions:
1. An on-line entity may receive a credential only if its own full-time staff writes a majority of that site's material.
2. On-line entities that focus primarily on University of Houston Athletics and sponsor message boards or chat rooms, may receive credentials provided they adhere to a policy that requires that a posted message or opinion is identified with the actual name and city of the individual posting the message.
3. Any on-line service that is recognized as an outlet intended primarily for the purpose of delivering news related to the recruitment of student-athletes will not qualify for credentials.
4. On-line entities will not receive photography credentials.
5. On-line entities (other than those identified above) registering 20,000 legitimate unique users per month in each of the past 12 months will be given first consideration.
'Real-time' transmission of digital images, audio and data, including live game play-by-play and statistics, of any home game is the exclusive property of the University of Houston and/or its rights holder(s). 'Real-time' is defined as 'live continual coverage or description of an event.'
Media Will Call
In most cases, credentials will be mailed. Credentials may be picked up through Friday on a game week from secretary Carolina Botero at the Sports Information Office. Credentials not mailed or picked up will be held at the Will Call window located a few steps from the main entrance to the west stands of John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
The NCAA has established a control policy to keep the field free from congestion. Only photographers on assignment and members of the television media are given photo credentials. In addition to a media credential, field photographers must obtain an armband that allows access to the sideline. Armbands will be available on the first level of the press box. This armband must be worn in plain sight at all times. All personnel not actually shooting the game, including grips, runners and sideline reporters, are asked to remain behind the photographers. Freelance or amateur photographers will not be issued credentials, unless approved by Associate Athletics Director Chris Burkhalter. All photographers must work outside the 30-yard lines as prescribed by the NCAA. Photographers are not permitted in the bench area. For those who need to transmit photos electronically, phone lines and wireless internet will be available in the press box. The University of Houston is, and shall be, the sole owner of any and all copyrights, intellectual property rights and proprietary rights for images, sounds and data arising from or during UH home athletics contests. Failure to follow this rule will result in removal from the sideline. To ensure the best possible working conditions for media photographers, uniformed security personnel will patrol the sidelines. Anyone holding a media pass who is not actively involved in coverage of the game will be escorted from the sideline. Similar procedures will be in effect in the press box. The use of photographs, video and/or audio for purposes other than traditional news coverage is forbidden. No redistribution is permitted.
Separate parking passes WILL be needed to enter the media parking lot located at the corner of Wheeler and Scott streets with the entrance off of Scott Street.
The Robertson Stadium press box is accessible through an elevator located on the west side of the stadium. The first level of the press box is reserved for print, radio and television reporters while the upper level holds broadcast booths, coaching booths and stadium operations. Television broadcasts will originate from the roof of the press box. Enter Robertson Stadium through the gate at the southwest corner of the stadium.
Robertson Stadium Press Will Call is clearly identified on the west side (press box side) of the stadium. Will Call credentials may also be picked up in the Sports Information Office in the Athletics/Alumni Center on Fridays before 4 p.m.
The Sports Information Office will provide four telephones on press row on a first-come, first-served basis at all UH home games. These phones will accept only credit card, collect or third-party long distance calls. To order a separate phone line, contact the UH Sports Information Office. Phone lines at Robertson Stadium must be ordered at least three weeks in advance.
Visiting Radio Information
The official radio broadcast network for the opposing team must be designated in writing by the visiting team's athletics director or sports information director. For information on radio lines, contact Chris Burkhalter, Associate Athletics Director, at (713) 743-9404.
Play-by-play, quarter, halftime and complete final statistics will be provided. Post-game quotes from UH Head Coach Tony Levine, UH players and the visiting coach will be distributed after the game. Statistics will be faxed to those media who request such service following the game, and will be posted on the Conference USA fax-on-demand. To make a fax request, please see a member of the Sports Information Staff in the press box.
A pre-game meal will be available to the media at Robertson Stadium. A meal ticket is attached to the bottom of the press pass. Sodas and snacks will be available throughout the game.
Houston maintains an open locker room policy. With approximately five minutes remaining in the game, members of the media will be escorted to the field by a member of the UH Sports Information Staff and/or the opposing team SID. Following a brief cooling off period, Houston Head Coach Tony Levine and UH players will be made available at Robertson Stadium in the Cougar locker area.
Each visiting team will set its own post-game interview policy, which will be announced on the press box public address system in the fourth quarter of the game. Check with the opposing team SID in the press box.
Interviews with Houston Head Coach Tony Levine are coordinated by the Sports Information Office. In general, Levine is available for interviews Monday-Wednesday between 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and again before practice. Please contact the SID Office at 713/743-9404 to set up an interview.
All members of the working press are welcome to attend University of Houston practices, which are held inside the Athletics/Alumni Center or on the adjacent practice fields outside. Please notify the UH SID Office when you will be attending practice so that we may inform the coaching staff. Practice may be closed subject to the coach's request.
Houston student-athletes are available for media interviews, either in person or on the phone, prior to meetings (Noon-2 p.m.), following practice and at different hours during the day depending on class and meeting schedules. Offensive players are available on Monday, with the defense available on Tuesday. Please contact the UH Sports Information Office to arrange all player interviews. The locker, training and weight rooms inside the UH Athletics/Alumni Center are off-limits to reporters. For phone interviews, please call the UH Sports Information Office at 743-9404 at least one day in advance of the day you would like to talk to the player. A staff member will fill out a card asking the player to return the call. The UH SID Office does not release student-athletes' phone numbers.
The University of Houston's Sports Information Office has the ability to provide video highlights to networks and television stations through UH Video Coordinator Grant Greene. Greene has editing and studio facilities inside the Athletics/Alumni Center and can reproduce highlights and other materials upon request. In most cases, there is a nominal fee or tape exchange request for these services. Please make requests at least two days in advance. Contact Greene at 713/743-9420.
Tony Levine Media Luncheon
Members of the working media are invited to attend a weekly luncheon with Head Coach Tony Levine and two members of the UH football squad. The luncheon is held in the Athletics/Alumni Center each Tuesday at noon. NO FANS/ALUMNI are allowed entrance.
C-USA Weekly Conference Call
The nine coaches of Conference USA will be available on a weekly conference call beginning Monday, Aug. 25 and on every Monday throughout the football season. Coach Levine will be available to take questions for approximately seven to 10 minutes each week on this call, which will take place from 1-2:15 p.m. Central time. Levine is scheduled to be on from 1:37-1:45 p.m. Contact Conference USA or the UH SID Office for the phone number.
Houston on the Web
Houston's athletics home page, featuring information on all 16 varsity sports, can be found at: http:\\www.UHcougars.com, the official web site of the University of Houston Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
CollegePressBox.com is the official media website for Conference USA football. Access and download weekly game notes, statistics, media guides and more for the conference and each of its 12 member schools throughout the season. Hi- and low-resolution head shots, action shots and logos are available for download, as well as information and photographs for other UH sports. Login information will be distributed by the conference office to accredited media or you can apply for a password by sending an e-mail to email@example.com.
Due to increasing costs of paper and mailing, the University of Houston no longer mails its football release each week. Instead UH has teamed with Sports Systems Services for an innovative media web site and photo platform at www.sportssystems.com/houston. UH football releases, including the daily practice trainers, are available on the site. Media simply login using the user name and password provided by UH media relations to access the information 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Please contact the UH media relations office for information on how to access the site or for any questions about the UH Media Web Site. Houston¹s weekly football release will be updated each Sunday night. Statistics will be available on Sundays after 2 p.m., and game statistics are loaded approximately one hour after each game on Saturday.
