Golf Finishes First Day in Hawai'i

WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i - The University of Houston golf team stood in 20th place Wednesday after the first round of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate. The Cougars fired a team score of 303 through the first 18 holes to stand 31 strokes behind first-round leader Georgia Tech. The second round continues Thursday morning on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa Kings' Course. Sophomore co-captain Zach Mowbray was a bright spot for the Cougars, firing an even-par 72 to tie for 32nd place. Fellow sophomore Kevin Newman shot a 75 in the first round and was in a tie for 64th place. Other Cougars competing were Jordan Hasbrouck (76, t-76th), Ricky Romano (80, t-101st) and Denton Walker (82, 104th). Georgia Tech's Nicholas Thompson took a four-stroke lead into the clubhouse after the first round after shooting 8-under-par 64 on Wednesday. Washington's Brock Mackenzie and UCLA's John Poucher tied for second at 4-under-par 68 with seven golfers tied for fourth at 3-under-par 69. UCLA was a distant second on the team leaderboard at 282 with Washington, Arizona State, UC Davis, Stanford, TCU, USC, Hawaii-Hilo, Arkansas, University of Commerce Nagoya and Tulsa rounding out the top 12 leaders.
