HOUSTON - University of Houston freshman Matt Scobie opened the Cougars' spring season with an impressive 68 Monday morning and stood in a tie for ninth after the first day of the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Golf Club.
Playing with teammate and redshirt freshman Emmett Oh as individuals, Scobie posted five birdies with only one bogey on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course. Although he recorded a 77 in the afternoon session, the Ajax, Ontario, Canada, native stood only four strokes out of the lead.
His first-round score topped his previous 18 hole low of 69, set during the final round at the HBU Husky Invitational on Oct. 1, 2013.
Redshirt freshman Emmett Oh fired back-to-back 76s and was tied for 33rd at 152.
With only two individuals competing, the Cougars were not eligible for the team title. UTSA and Cincinnati were tied for the team lead at 581 with Old Dominion (586), Sam Houston State (592), Rice (595) rounding out the top-5 leaders.
On the individual leaderboard, Cincinnati's Jared Howard finished the first day at 3-under-par 144 with Old Dominion's Jamison Randall in second at 142.
The Final Round tees off with an 8 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday. Scobie and Oh will compete in the same group off No. 17. Fans can follow Final Round live scoring by visiting BirdieFire.com and following the appropriate links or by clicking here.
