Golf Wins Team Championship at Club de Golf Santa Anita/North Texas Classic

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - University of Houston junior Pablo Acuna roared back during the final nine holes to shoot 68 in the final round and capture medallist honors at the Club de Golf Santa Anita/North Texas Classic on Tuesday. As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 287 to break out of a tie with Indiana and win the championship by three strokes over the Hoosiers with a 54-hole total of 865. It was the first team championship of the 2005-06 season for the Cougars. After shooting a 37 on the front nine, Acuna rallied with a dazzling 31 on the back nine. The Guatemala City, Guatemala, native birdied five of the last six holes to finish at 6-under-par 210, one stroke ahead of Indiana's Jorge Campillo. Acuna wasn't the only Cougar golf who played well to open the spring season. Senior Zach Mowbray finished with a 3-under-par 213 to tie for fourth place, while junior Ricky Romano tied for seventh place after posting a score of 1-over-par 217. Kevin Newman finished in a tie for 24th place after shooting 225, while sophomore Jordan Irwin tied for 34th place after firing a 228. The Cougars return to action on Feb. 27-28 when they play host to the All-American Intercollegiate at the Tradition course of Cypresswood Golf Club. It marks the return of this tournament for the first time since the 1997 season after starting in 1955. TEAM LEADERBOARD
