HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team stood in fourth place Monday after the first day of the All-American Intercollegiate/George Thorn.

Under cold conditions during the morning round at Cypresswood Golf Club, the Cougars fired a team score of 302 to stand in seventh place. But as the day wore on and the temperatures increased, so did the Cougars' level of play.

UH fired a 3-over-par 291 in the afternoon session to move up three places and finished the first day with a score of 593.

The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes on the par-72, 7,220-yard course, beginning Tuesday morning.

Middle Tennessee stood atop the team leaderboard with a two-round score of 577. Louisiana-Lafayette was in second place at 582, while Southeastern Louisiana placed third at 584. North Texas (594), Cal State Northridge (597), UALR (600), New Mexico State (600), Texas State (603) and Sam Houston State (605) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.

Individually, senior captain Ben Moser rebounded from a tough morning session to shoot a 3-under-par 69 in the afternoon and stood in second place at 143.

Junior transfer Beau Davis was tied for ninth place after firing a 73 in both rounds, while sophomore transfer Clark Mitzner was tied for 41st place at 153. Other Cougars in action were junior Jackie Lindsey (154, t-46th), sophomore transfer Matt Eschenburg (156, t-56th), redshirt freshman Eric Adler (150, t-26th), senior captain Brady Shivers (165, 67th) and senior Ashish Patel (177, 71st).

Middle Tennessee's Kent Bulle opened the tournament with a 67, the low round of the day, and followed that with a 69 to finish at 8-under-par 136.

Sam Houston State's Beau Willis and Philipp Fendt of Louisiana-Lafayette were tied for third at 144, while four players were tied at 145.
