SPRING, Texas – The University of Houston Men’s Golf program posted a team score of 357 to defeat Minnesota in a single round of stroke play on Saturday afternoon at Augusta Pines Golf Club.
Minnesota posted a team score of 382 on the 7,041-yard, par-72 layout in the recent addition to the Cougars’ spring schedule.
Houston junior Matt Williams fired a 4-under 68 in Saturday’s round to lead all players and finished two strokes in front of teammate Zach Tracy. Six Cougars finished among the round’s top-seven leaders.
Senior and 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships medalist Michael Perras finished third at even-par 72, while freshman Alexander Frances joined freshman Andrew Gibson – who was making his collegiate debut – and Minnesota’s Runar Arnorsson in a tie for fourth at 73.
Sophomore Bryce Beshoory finished seventh at 74, while senior and 2017 All-American Athletic Conference performer Papito Gonzalez finished 10th at 76. Making his season debut, sophomore Sam Elkington finished 16th at 83.
Saturday’s play featured 6-man lineups with the low five counting toward the team score.
Following Saturday’s round against Minnesota, Gibson, Frances, sophomore Pryce Beshoory and senior Alan De Bondt will compete as individuals at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist at Augusta Pines Golf Club in Spring, Texas.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament begins with 36 holes Monday and wraps up with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
Following the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, the Cougars return to action when they play host to the Querencia Cabo Collegiate on March 4-6 at Querencia Golf Club in San Jose, Cabo, Mexico. From there, Houston will host the Border Olympics on March 9-10 at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas.
