AIKEN, S.C. - University of Houston freshman golfer Jordan Irwin shot a 1-under-par 70 in the final round to win medallist honors at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club on Tuesday.

As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 288 in the final round to set a new season best and tied with host South Carolina-Aiken for the team championship. UH and USC-Aiken competed in two playoff holes without the tie being broken before the Cougars had to leave to catch their flight home.

Irwin, a native of Calgary, Alberta, finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 1-under-par 212 and was the only golfer in the field to finish under par. He finished one stroke ahead of South Carolina-Aiken's Clint Smith.

Irwin became the second Cougar to win an individual championship this season, joining junior Zach Mowbray who won the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic in the season-opening tournament.

It was the second team championship for the Cougars in 2004-05 and the first during the spring season. It also was the first time since 1998-99 that UH won two team championships in the same season.

Sophomore Ricky Romano tied for third at 3-over-par 216, while sophomore Pablo Acuna was the third Cougar linkster in the Top 11 after shooting a 71 in the final round to finish at 7-over-par 220. Other Cougars in action were Kevin Newman (226, t-25th) and Zach Mowbray (238, t-59th).

The Cougars return to action on Friday when they compete at the Hall of Fame Invitational, hosted by the Golf Coaches Association of America at Red Stone Golf Club in Houston. That 54-hole tournament runs through Sunday.
