The University of Houston men's golf team shot a 16-under-par 272 to finish the second round tied for third place at the Border Olympics Golf Tournament on the 7,241-yard, par 72 course at the Laredo Country Club on Friday, Mar. 16.

Houston opened the second round in 11th place after shooting 10-over par 298 in the first day. Ricky Romano led the Cougars with a score of two-under par 70 in the opening round, while Jordan Irwin, Rian Butler and Todd Bissenden each fired four-over-par in the first round.

In the second round, Irwin bounced back with his best round of the 2006-07 season as he fired a six-under-par 66. Romano shot a four-under-par 68, while Bissenden and Pablo Acuna each shot three-under-par for the Cougars.

Ninth-ranked Lamar is the best team score of 21-under-par two-round total of 555 after shooting a three-under-par 285 in the first round and 18-under-par in the second round. The Cardinals have an 11-stroke lead over Vanderbilt who combined to shoot 10-under-par and 15 strokes ahead of both Houston and Texas Arlington.

Baylor, the defending champion is in fifth place with a team score of 573, while Notre Dame and Louisiana-Lafayette are tied for sixth place with a team score of two-over par with 578.

 

 

Zack Reeves of UTA is the individual leader after shooting seven-under-par 137. Reeves shot three-under in the first round and finished the second round with a four-under par score of 68.

Romano is tied with Cole Isban of Notre Dame and Lamar's Oliver Bekker and Justin Harding for second place one shot back. Dawie VanDerWalt of Lamar, Vanderbilt's Jon Curran are tied with Baylor's Wesley Williams for sixth place with a score of five-under-par. Williams is playing as an individual and his scores do not count in the team scoring.

Kyle Simmons of South Alabama and Justin Lowe of Louisiana-Lafayette are tied for ninth place at three-under par, while Irwin is tied with Vanderbilt's Luke List finished in a tie for 11th place at two-under par.
