Golf Adds Redstone Challenge to Spring Schedule

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Houston golf team stood in 10th place Monday after the first two rounds of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.

Second-round play was suspended due to darkness with six teams - including the Cougars - still on the course. Play will be resumed at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday with the final 18 holes scheduled to begin around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

After shooting a team score of 1-over-par 289 in the morning round, the Cougars shot 4-over-par in the afternoon session with about four holes remaining. At 5-over-par, UH stood in 10th place, 25 strokes behind host Texas. Oklahoma State was second with a two-round score of 16-under-par 560, while Arizona State and UNLV were tied at 3-under-par 573.

Texas A&M, Arkansas, Conference USA rival TCU, Fresno State and Pepperdine rounded out the top nine team leaders.

Individually, freshman Kevin Newman led the way for the Cougars and was tied for 16th after the first day. The League City, Texas, native fired a 73 in the opening round but was 3-under-par through 14 holes in the afternoon session.

Seniors John Wine and Brett Callas were tied for 35th at 2-over-par. Wine fired a score of 2-under-par 70 in the first 18 holes but was 4-over-par through 15 holes in the afternoon session.

Callas was the opposite. After shooting a 2-over-par 74 in the morning round, the Huffman, Texas, native rebounded and was at even-par through 14 holes in the afternoon.

Freshman Zach Mowbray, the team's leading scorer entering the tournament was tied for 46th at 3-over-par with three holes left to play. Junior transfer Denton Walker was tied for 79th at 11-over-par with two holes remaining.

Texas' J.J. Wall stood atop the individual leaderboard after shooting 10-under-par 134 in the first two rounds. Jason Hartwick (Texas) and Andrew Dahl (Arkansas) were tied for second at 8-under-par with Hartwick having five holes still to play in the second round.
