Golf in 12th Place at Hall of Fame Invitational
March 18, 2005
HOUSTON - University of Houston freshman golfer Jordan Irwin fired an even-par 72 during the opening round of the Hall of Fame Invitational to stand in a tie for 12th place Friday. Irwin helped lead the Cougars to a team score of 300 and a 12th-place standing on the par-72, 7,352-yard course at Redstone Golf Club. The Calgary, Alberta, native entered this weekend's tournament on a hot streak after winning the Palmetto Intercollegiate last week in Aiken, S.C. It was the first collegiate championship of his career and the second of the season by a Cougar performer after Zach Mowbray claimed medallist honors at the season-opening Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic. Other Cougar linksters in action Friday were Pablo Acuna (75, t-38th), Ricky Romano (76, t-52nd), Kevin Newman (77, t-63rd) and Zach Mowbray (81, t-92nd). Conference USA rival TCU grabbed the first-round lead after shooting a team score of 3-under-par 285. UNLV was second at 287, while Wake Forest (290), Oklahoma (292), New Mexico (292) and Oklahoma State (292) rounded out the Top Six leaders. Wake Forest's Kyle Reifers stood atop the individual leaderboard after firing a 6-under-par 66 through the first 18 holes, doubling Charlie Beljan of New Mexico. The tournament continues at 7:30 a.m., Saturday with the second round before wrapping up with the final 18 holes Sunday. TEAM LEADERBOARD
