PALM CITY, Fla. – The University of Houston Men’s Golf program moved to second place at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational following Second Round play Monday at Floridian National Golf Club.
The Cougars, who stand at No. 49 in the latest Golfstat national rankings, posted a team score of 285 Monday for a 36-hole total of 580. No. 10 Wake Forest maintained its lead with a score of 571 with No. 3 Oklahoma State (582), No. 27 Georgia Tech (582) and No. 14 Texas A&M (583) rounding out the top-five leaders.
Individually, junior Michael Perras posted the team’s low score of the day with a 69 on the 7,114-yard, par-71 course and was tied for 11th at 144. Fellow junior Papito Gonzalez was tied for eighth at 143 following Monday’s play.
Starting his day on No. 1, Perras sank consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-3 and moved to 3-under through six holes with another birdie on No. 6.
The Deer Park, Texas, native opened his back nine with a bogey but rallied with his fourth and final birdie of the day on the 539-yard, par-5 15th hole.
Gonzalez drained five birdies in his Second Round, including three straight on Nos. 12-14 to maintain his place among the top-10 individual leaders.
North Texas’ Thomas Rosenumeller and Eric Bae of Wake Forest held the individual lead at 140, while Oklahoma State’s Kristoffer Ventura and Scott Stevens of South Carolina were tied for third at 141. Will Zalatoris (Wake Forest), Riley Johnson (Minnesota) and Tyler Strafaci (Georgia Tech) were tied for fifth at 142.
The tournament wraps up at 7 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday with a split-tee start.
FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS
For Tuesday’s Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with Wake Forest and Oklahoma State off No. 1, beginning at 7:45 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday.
Tracy begins the day at 7:45 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday, with Beshoory (7:54 a.m. CDT), Williams (8:03 a.m. CDT), Perras (8:12 a.m. CDT) and Gonzalez (8:21 a.m. CDT) following.
Davis and Cavner begin at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday, off No. 1 to start the individuals with Scobie (8:48 a.m. CDT) and Gil (8:57 a.m. CDT) following on No. 10.
Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, the Cougars compete at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 25-28, at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Charleston, S.C.
From there, the team closes out the regular season at the 3M Augusta Hills Invitational, hosted by Augusta at Forest Hill Country Club on April 1-2.
