Golf in Second Place at First Tee/UALR Collegiate Classic

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Houston golf team stood in second place Monday after the first day at the First Tee/UALR Collegiate Classic. The Cougars, who will compete in their second tournament in a five-day span, fired a team score of 289 in the morning session and followed that with a 296 in the afternoon for a total of 585, only two strokes behind team leader Sam Houston State. The final 18 holes on the 7,221-yard, par-72 course at Chenal Country Club begins Tuesday morning. Junior Kevin Newman led the Cougars with an even-par 144 to stand in a tie for fifth place. Fellow junior Zach Mowbray finished at 1-over-par 145 to tie for seventh place after the first 36 holes. Other Cougars in action were freshman Jordan Irwin (71-78 - 149, t-21st), sophomore Pablo Acuna (74-76 - 150, t-27th) and sophomore Ricky Romano (79-75 - 154, t-48th). Sam Houston State's Robert Gwin shot a 65 in the second round and lead the individual competition at 7-under-par 137. UALR's Patrick Sullivan was second at 139, while Oral Roberts Mauricio Tamez and Louisville's Brett Jones came in at 140 and 141, respectively. Arkansas State (588), Louisiana-Monroe (593) and Ball State (599) rounded out the top 11 team leaders.
