Golf in 10th Place at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas - Sophomore Zach Mowbray fired a 4-under-par 140 during the first day of the Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club to stand in a tie for sixth place on Friday. The Cougar co-captain shot 1-under-par 71 in the morning round on the X,XXX-yard, par-72 course but followed that with a 69 in the final 18 holes of the day to tie with six other golfers. Mowbray, a native of Mesa, Ariz., has led the Cougars during each of the last three tournaments. SMU's Jerad Harklau stood atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under-par 134. Colorado State's Martin Laird as a close second at 136, while SMU's Will Dodson was in third at 138. Freshman Ricky Romano stood in a tie for 48th place at 4-over-par 148, while senior co-captain Denton Walker was tied for 61st at 6-over-par 150. Other Cougars in action were Blake Parks (t-76th, 77-181 - 152) and Kevin Newman (t-81st, 75-79 - 154). The Cougars fired a team score of 11-over-par 587 through the first 36 holes to tie with North Texas and Michigan State in 10th place after the first day. UH posted a team score of 292 in the morning session and followed that with a 295 in the afternoon round for its first-day standing. SMU had a commanding lead on the team leaderboard through the first 36 holes. The Mustangs fired a team score of 558, 11 stroke better than Baylor. BYU, San Diego State, Lamar, Colorado State, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech rounded out the top nine leaders. The tournament concludes with the final round slated to begin Saturday morning.
