Golf Finishes in 14th Place at Border Olympics

April 3, 2004

LAREDO, Texas - University of Houston sophomore Zach Mowbray fired an even-par 72 during the final round of the Border Olympics on Saturday to tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.

It was Mowbray's third consecutive even-par round or better at the tournament and it marked the fourth consecutive tournament in which the Cougar co-captain led the team in scoring. His seventh place finish tied a season best for the Cougars.

In addition, Mowbray set a new 54-hole career-best at 4-under-par 212 and his 3-under-par 69 in the second round Friday tied his previous 18-hole best, set earlier this season at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.

Other Cougars in actions were Ricky Romano (t-54th, 75-73-77 - 225); Kevin Newman (t-75th, 75-79-76 - 230); Blake Parks (t-80th, 71-81-80 - 232); and Denton Walker (84th, 76-74-83 - 233).

Colorado State's Martin Laird fired a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to win medallist honors at 9-under-par 207. SMU's Jerad Harklau and Baylor's Ryan Baca tied for second at 208.

As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 305 during Saturday's final round on the 7,125-yard, par-72 course at Laredo Country Club to finish in 14th place in a 17-team field. SMU captured the team championship with a 54-hole score of 852 to finish seven strokes ahead of Baylor. BYU, Colorado State, San Diego State, Arkansas, host Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Lamar, North Texas and Texas-Arlington rounded out the Top 11 leaders.

The Cougars will now take a few weeks off before returning to action on April 19-21 at the Conference USA Championships in Dade City, Fla.
