Golf in 14th Place at Morris Williams Intercollegiate

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Houston golf team stood in 14th place Monday after the first day at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at Austin Country Club. The Cougars posted a 36-hole score of 623 on the par-72, 6,906-yard course to stand 53 strokes behind first-day leader Florida. Oklahoma State was in second place at 583 with Texas (594), Tulsa (297), SMU (301), Oklahoma (601), Arkansas (296), Texas A&M (607), BYU (61U) and Baylor (611) rounding out the Top 10 team leaders. Tulsa, SMU and Arkansas were unable to finish the second round due to darkness. Those teams will complete their second rounds at 7:45 a.m. while the final round is slated to begin at 8:45 a.m. with a shotgun start. The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning. It will be the last regular-season tournament for the Cougars before they begin competition at the Conference USA Championship on April 18-20 at Gulfport, Miss. Individually, sophomore Ricky Romano posted a two-round score of 10-over-par 154 to stand in a tie for 42nd place. Other Cougars in action were sophomore Pablo Acuna (76-79 -- 155, t-46th), junior Zach Mowbray (78-79 - 157, t-55th), junior Kevin Newman (80-77 - 157, t-55th) and freshman Jordan Irwin (80-80 - 160, t-73rd). Florida's Richard Treis grabbed the first-day lead at 4-under-par 140, while teammate Matt Every and Texas' Shaun Goodwin tied for second at 142. Team Leaderboard
