Golf in Fifth Place after First Day of Conference USA Championship

GULFPORT, Miss. - Junior Kevin Newman fired a 1-under-par 71 Monday during the first day of the 2005 Conference USA Championship to help lead the University of Houston golf team to a fifth-place showing at the Grand Bear Golf Course. The Cougars fired a team score of 293 in the opening round of the three-day event to stand 15 strokes behind first-day leader TCU, who recorded a 278. UAB finished second after the first 18 holes at 286, while Charlotte and Tulane tied for third at 289. Individually, junior Kevin Newman posted a 1-under-par 71 during the first day to stand in a tie for eighth place and lead all Cougar linksters. Sophomores Pablo Acuna and Ricky Romano and freshman Jordan Irwin each posted a 2-over-par 74 on Monday to tie for 21st place, while junior Zach Mowbray was in a tie for 34th place at 4-over-par 76. East Carolina's Robin Smith stood atop the individual leaderboard after shooting a 6-under-par 66 in the first round. TCU's Colby Beckstrom was one stroke back at 67, while UAB's Garrett Osborn and Charlotte's Clint Deibert tied for third at 68. The second round continues Tuesday morning with the final round slated for Wednesday. TEAM LEADERBOARD
