Golf Remains in Fifth Place at C-USA Championship

GULFPORT, Miss. - The University of Houston golf team remained in fifth place Tuesday after the second day of the 2005 Conference USA Championship at the Grand Bear Golf Club. The Cougars fired a team score of 296 to finish at 589 after 36 holes on the par-72, 7,093-yard course. TCU remained atop the team standings at 560, while Charlotte stood a distant second at 579. UAB placed third at 582 with Tulane coming in fourth at 583. Louisville (594), Memphis (601), host Southern Miss (601), East Carolina (605), Marquette (614), Cincinnati (616), USF (618), DePaul (622) and Saint Louis (638) rounded out the rest of the field. The third and final round begins at 7:45 p.m., Wednesday. Individually, freshman Jordan Irwin topped all Cougar linksters with a score of 2-over-par 146 after shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday to stand in a tie for 12th place. It was the best score by any UH golfer during the second round. Sophomore Pablo Acuna and junior Kevin Newman tied for 19th at 5-over-par 147. Other Cougars in action were sophomore Ricky Romano (149, t-26th) and junior Zach Mowbray (152, t-33rd). TCU's Colby Beckstrom remained atop the individual leaderboard at 6-under-par 138, while teammate Drew Stoltz stood in second plate at 139. UAB's Garrett Osborn and East Carolina's Robin Smith tied for third place at 140.
