Golf Finishes Sixth at C-USA Championships

GULFPORT, Miss. - The University of Houston golf team finished the 2005 Conference USA Championships on Wednesday with a sixth-place showing at the Golden Bear Golf Club. The Cougars fired a team score of 298 during the final round to finish the 54-hole event at 887 on the par-72, 7,093-yard course. Individually, freshman Jordan Irwin topped all Cougars with a score of 3-over-par 219. The Calgary, Alberta, native fired a 73, the Cougars best round of the day on Wednesday, to finish in a tie for 19th place. Sophomore Pablo Acuna, who was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team, finished in a tie for 19th place after finishing the tournament at 221. Other Cougars in action were junior Kevin Newman (222, t-23rd), sophomore Ricky Romano (225, t-33rd) and junior Zach Mowbray (229, t-43rd). TCU won the team championship after shooting 841, 26 strokes better than runner-up Charlotte. Tulane finished third at 872, while UAB (877) and Louisville (883) rounded out the Top Five leaders. TCU's Colby Beckstrom and Drew Stoltz tied for medalist honors at 7-under-par 209.
