Golf Ended Second Round One Stroke Behind First Place

TAMPA, Fla. - Senior John Wine fired a 2-under-par 69 to help lead the University of Houston golf team to a second-place standing, one stroke behind leaders TCU after the second day of the 2003 Conference USA Championships on Tuesday.

Senior Brett Callas leads all Cougars with 2-under par 140, which puts him in third place on the individual leaderboard with Charlotte's Russell Killough and TCU's Adam Meyer.

As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 10-over-par 578 in the first two rounds to stand one stroke behind TCU and two strokes in front of UAB.

The 54-hole tournament continues at 7 a.m. (CDT) Wednesday on the par-71, 7,083-yard course at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Tampa.

Other Cougar golfers competing were Daniel Angenscheidt (t-37th, 150), Zach Mowbray (t-44th, 152) and Denton Walker (t-46th, 153).

Louisville (583), Southern Miss. (587), Memphis (593), South Florida (594), East Carolina (594), Charlotte (594) and Marquette (596) rounded out the top 10 team leaders.
