PALM HARBOR, Fla. -- The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in eighth place Sunday following the First Round at the American Athletic Conference Championships presented by Visit St. Pete Clearwater.

Competing on the 7,125-yard, par-71 Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club, the Cougars finished the first day with a team score of 301.

No. 21 USF held the first-day lead at 284. UCF (289), SMU (290), Cincinnati (291), ECU (292), Wichita State (292) and Temple (296) rounded out the Top-7 leaders with Memphis (302) and UConn (302) tied for ninth.

Senior and defending American champion Michael Perras, sophomore George Gardner -- who was making his American Championships debut -- and senior Papito Gonzalez each finished with 75s Sunday to tie for 30th and lead the Cougars.

Sophomore Zach Tracy was tied for 37th at 76, while junior Matt Williams was tied for 42nd at 77.

Cincinnati's Davis Baxter finished with a 1-under 70 to hold the individual lead, while Jackson Markham (SMU), Claudio Correa (USF), Jacob Bishop (Wichita State), Cristian DiMarco (USF), Priyanshu Singh (USF), Borja Martin (Memphis), Jimmy Jones (USF), McClure Meissner (SMU) and Kyler Tate (UCF) were tied for second with 71s.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Monday with the Second Round teeing off at 6:30 a.m. (CDT). The Final Round begins at 6:30 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday.

For Monday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Temple, starting off No. 10.

Williams will start the day for Houston at 7:17 a.m. (CDT) with Tracy (7:25 a.m.) Gonzalez (7:34 a.m.), Gardner (7:42 a.m.) and Perras (7:51 a.m.) following.

Following the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Cougars will learn their NCAA postseason fate during the NCAA Selection Show, set for 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, on Golf Channel.
