Men's Golf Moves into Tie for Fifth at NCAA Eugene Regional

EUGENE, Ore. - For the second straight day, the 10th-ranked University of Houston Men's Golf overcame a slow start and took advantage of a strong finish to move into a tie for fifth place at 583 following the NCAA Eugene Regional Second Round.
The Cougars posted a team score of 293 Friday on the 6,990-yard, par-70 course at Eugene Country Club to move one spot higher in the team standings. Houston's 5-man starting lineup finished 12-over-par on the front nine but rallied to shoot five strokes lower on the back nine.
In addition, the Cougars drained a combined four birdies on the final two holes to take some momentum into Saturday's Final Round.
Houston was tied with North Florida for fifth place at 583. No. 3 Stanford held the team lead for the second straight day at 558 to finish nine strokes in front of No. 15 Oklahoma. Host and 40th-ranked Oregon stood in third at 569, while No. 22 South Carolina finished fourth at 579.
The top-5 teams and the top individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Houston has not competed at the NCAA Championships since 2001.
Senior Curtis Reed and junior Kyle Pilgrim were tied for 19th at 144 with Reed leading the team's strong finish. The Castroville, Texas, native sank three birdies in the round, including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 17 and 18, to finish with a 72 for the second straight day, Houston's low round of the day.
Junior Roman Robledo, who won three straight individual titles to open the spring season, finished at 146 to tie for 24th. Senior James Ross bettered his First Round score by eight strokes and was tied for 55th at 152. Senior Wesley McClain stood in 61st at 153.
After the Cougars and North Florida, Chattanooga (587), East Tennessee State (589), No. 47 Tennessee (591) and No. 34 Liberty (592) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, Stanford's Patrick Rodgers held a commanding lead at 7-under-par 133, six strokes ahead of Oregon's Zach Foushee, Chattanooga's Chris Robb and teammate Cameron Wilson. David Fink of Oregon State and South Carolina's Will Starke were tied for fifth at 140.

Saturday's Final Round tees off at 9:50 a.m. (CDT), Playing in threesomes with North Florida and South Carolina, the Cougars will start their day off No. 1 at 9:50 a.m. (CDT).
McClain begins his day for the Cougars at 9:50 a.m. (CDT) with Ross (10:01 a.m.), Robledo (10:12 a.m.), Pilgrim (10:23 a.m.) and Reed (10:34 a.m.) following.
