Jordan Irwin Rebounds in Second Round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Central Regional Championship

Sugar Grove, Ill.- - University of Houston junior golfer Jordan Irwin came back to shoot an even par score in the second round of the NCAA Division I Central Regional and climbed 25 spots in the overall individual standings. Irwin, who opened the tournament with a score of eight over par in the opening round, came back to shoot even par Friday on the par-72, 7240-yard course at Rich Harvest Farms. Irwin is one of six golfers who are playing as individuals at the Central Regional, and enters Saturday's final round with the fourth-best score among that group and tied for 35th place overall. He began the second round with a pair of birdies (No. 2 and No. 7) and two bogies (No. 3 and No. 6) on the front nine. He completed the round with a bogie on No. 13 and regained some momentum with a birdie on No. 18. Irwin is one of six players who are playing as individuals at the Central Regional. Andrew Landry of Arkansas leads the group after finishing the second round tied for fifth place overall with a one-over-par, two-round 145 total. Mike Van Sickle of Marquette is two shots back and tied for 11th place overall. Jason Kokrak of Xavier is tied for 20th place with a score of 149. Irwin is tied with 12 other players at 152. The other two individual players, Maurico Tamez of Oral Roberts and Jorge Campillo of Indiana, are seven players tied with a score of 158. The top two players among that group along with the Top 10 teams will qualify to compete in the NCAA Championships on May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club's Gold Course in Williamsburg, Va. In the team standings, the University of Tulsa trimmed 25 strokes off their opening round score as the Golden Hurricane shot a second-day 280 to overtake Louisville for the lead. Tulsa's Ryan Henry and Brett Myers each find themselves tied for fifth at one-over-par following rounds of 68 and 74, respectively. As a team, Tulsa holds a seven-stroke tournament lead with a two-round tally of 585. Louisville is in second place with a 592, while Lamar (594), Alabama (596), Tennessee (603), Minnesota (604), Texas (605), Oklahoma State (606), Texas Tech (606), and Texas A&M (607) round out the top 10 teams.
Lamar's Dawie Van Der Walt is the individual leader at four-under-par (140), following his second-round tally of 69. Louisville's Daryl Fathauer is one stroke behind Van Der Walt at 141 (71-70), followed by Wisconsin's Dan Woltman (E), Western Illinois' Tim Streng (E) and Henry and Myers. |
