Golf Wins Mean Green Classic, Mowbray Takes Medalist Honors
Sept. 14, 2004
FLOWER MOUND, Texas - University of Houston golfer Zach Mowbray was the only player to break 70 during the final round Tuesday of the Mean Green Classic on the way to medalist honors at Lantana Golf Club. The Mesa, Ariz., native fired a 4-under-par 68 on the 7,120-yard, par-72 course to finish at 211 and finish one stroke ahead of Arkansas-Little Rock's Patrick Sullivan. He was one of three Cougars who improved his score with each round of the 54-hole event. Mowbray was only part of an all-around solid performance by the Cougar team, which fired the best team score of the day at 286 during the final 18 holes and rallied from a seven-stroke deficit to win the team championship by 10 strokes over host North Texas. The Cougars were the only team to break 300 as a team in the final round and bettered their closest competitor during the last 18 holes by nine strokes. It was the best round by a UH team since the Cougars posted a combined score of 274 during the second round of the Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Feb. 13, 2003. Stephen F. Austin (877), UALR (883), Middle Tennessee (892), Arkansas State (893), Texas-San Antonio (303), Sam Houston State (900), Louisiana-Lafayette (901) and Louisiana Tech (902) rounded out the Top 10 team leaders. It was the first team tournament victory by the Cougars since the 2001 UH team won the last of its five consecutive Conference USA championships. Mowbray became the first Cougar linkster to win medalist honors since Brett Callas took first place at the 2003 NCAA Central Regional. All five Cougars finished among the Top 25 individual leaders. Sophomore Ricky Romano tied for third at 217. Sophomore Pablo Acuna and freshman Jordan Irwin, making his first collegiate appearance, tied for 19th after shooting 222, while senior Jordan Hasbrouck finished in 25th place with a score of 223. Tuesday's level of play was nothing new for the Cougars at this tournament. In 2003-04, the Cougars finished second at the Mean Green Classic, behind the play of Hasbrouck who tied for second place on the individual leaderboard.
The Cougars return to action in less than a week when they compete at the Kansas Invitational at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan., on Sept. 20-21.
