FLOWER MOUND, Texas - The University of Houston golf team opened its 2003-04 season in fine fashion Tuesday with a second-place finish at the Mean Green Classic in Flower Mound, Texas. Standing in fourth place entering the day's final 18 holes on the 7,135-yard, par-72 course at Lantana Golf Club, the Cougars fired a team score of 295 to jump two spots in the final standings. Individually, junior Jordan Hasbrouck and true freshman Ricky Romano - each competing in their first tournament as a Cougar - earned Top 10 finishes on the individual leaderboard. Hasbrouck fired a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday and finished the event tied for second at 2-under-par 214. Romano remained steady and shot his lowest score of the tournament - 71 - to tie for seventh at even-par 216. As a team, the Cougars finished nine shots behind host North Texas. Louisiana-Monroe placed third with a score of 880, while McNeese State, Louisville, Washington State, Stephen F. Austin State, Texas State-San Marcos, Arkansas State and Middle Tennessee rounded out the Top 10 leaders. Other Cougars competing at the tournament were Denton Walker (221 - t-21st); Zach Mowbray (225 - t-42nd); Daniel Angenscheidt (244 - 88th) and Pablo Acuna (233 - t-79th), who was playing in his first collegiate event after sitting out all of last season with a redshirt. Arkansas State's Wixson Huffstetler earned medalist honors after finishing the two-day event with a score of 4-under-par 212.
The Cougars return to action in less than a week when they compete at the Kansas Invitational on Sept. 22-23 at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan.
