Golf in Seventh Place at Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Houston golf team stood in seventh place Monday after the first day of competition at the Kansas Invitational. The Cougars fired a team score of 295 during the morning's first 18 holes and posted a 297 in the afternoon session to stand at 592, 21 strokes behind host Kansas on the 6,950-yard, par-72 course at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The tournament concludes with the final 18 holes scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday. Denton Walker, the only senior on the 2003-04 Cougar team, led UH by shooting 1-over-par 145 through the first 36 holes. The Houston native fired a 2-under-par 70 in the early round before shooting a 75 later in the day. Freshman Ricky Romano was the only other Cougar to shoot under par in a round Tuesday. The Murietta, Calif., native shot a 1-under-par 71 in the afternoon round but was tied for 21st at 3-over-par 147. Other Cougars competing in the tournament were Zach Mowbray (73-76 - 149, t-35th), Kevin Newman (76-77 - 153, t-55th) and Jordan Hasbrouck (79-75 - 154, t-64th). On the team leaderboard, Wichita State stood in second place at 583 while North Texas was third at 586. Iowa State, Louisville and Oral Roberts rounded out the Top Six team leaders. Individually, Kansas' Andrew Price stood in first place at 8-under-par 136, five strokes ahead of Illinois State's Brian Anderson. Following the Kansas Invitational, the Cougars now will take two weeks off before returning to action at the Pepperdine/Club Cove Invitational in Malibu, Calif., on Oct. 6-7.
