Golf in 10th Place after Day One at Club Glove Intercollegiate

SOMIS, Calif. - The University of Houston golf team stood in a tie for 10th place Monday after firing back-to-back team rounds of 305 during the first day of The Club Glove Intercollegiate at Saticoy Golf Club in Somis, Calif. The tournament concludes at 10: 30 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday with the final 18 holes. The Cougars joined UC Irvine and New Mexico in the tie, 39 strokes behind host Pepperdine on the 6,858-yard, par-72 course. Pepperdine grabbed the team lead after three of its players finished among the Top Eight individual leaders. Arizona State stood in second place at 589, while Colorado State, Kansas and Tulsa rounded out the Top Five team leaders. Senior Denton Walker was the Cougars' leading performer after shooting a 5-over-par 149 during the first day. Freshman Ricky Romano, who has recorded back-to-back Top 11 finishes in his first two collegiate tournaments, was in a tie for 20th place after shooting 6-over-par 149. Individually, Pepperdine's Michael Putman stood atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under-par 140, one stroke ahead of teammate Randy Creighton. Colorado State's Martin Laird was in third place, while Tulsa's David Inglis, Colorado State's Nolan Martin, Colorado's Kane Webber and Kansas' Kevin Ward were tied for fourth at 144.
