Cougars Stand In 13th-Place At The Coca-Cola Duke Classic

Durham, N.C. - Coca-Cola Duke Classic Scores Through Second Round
The University of Houston men's golf team shot a combined two-round score of 604 and stands in 13th place after the first two rounds of the 2006 Coca-Cola Duke Classic Sunday. Senior Pablo Acuna led the Cougars, ending the first day tied for 11th place with a one-over-par score of 145. Acuna shot an even par 72 in the second round after he opened the tournament with a one-over 73. Freshman Jackie Lindsey began his collegiate career shooting a 10-over-par 145 in the first two rounds. Lindsey, who is tied fir 58th place in the individual standings, finished the first day with a score of five-over-par 77 in each of the first two rounds. Junior Steven Frazier and senior Ricky Romano are tied for 62nd place one shot back with 11-over-par score of 155 after they both finished the first day with a five-over par 77 in the first round and a six-over par score of 78 in the second round. Senior Jordan Irwin, Houston's top individual player entering the tournament, finished the second round with a one-over par 73 to rebound from his worst round of the season, an 11-over-par 83 in the opening round of the tournament.
Coastal Carolina enters the third and final round of the Coca-Cola Duke Classic as the team leader with a team score of 570. North Carolina is in second place with 574, while VCU is in third place with a score of 578. Old Dominion is in fourth place with 580 and the host school Duke is in fifth place with a score of 581. Houston is eight shots behind ninth-place Ohio State and Florida Southern, as they ended the first day with a combined score of 596 on the first day of the tournament. Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina shot a combined seven under par, 137, in the first two rounds to enter the final round as the tournament's individual leader. David Holzworth of North Carolina is in second place at six-under par. VCU's Lanto Griffin and Old Dominion's Jeff Long are tied for third at four under. |
