HUNTSVILLE, Texas - University of Houston freshman Matt Scobie fired a 1-under-par 70 Tuesday for the second straight round to finish with a score of 211 and place fifth at the Sam Houston State/Harold Funston Invitational.
Playing on the on the 6,943-yard, par-71 course at Raven Nest Golf Club, Scobie posted three straight rounds of par or better for the first time during his collegiate career to earn his best finish to date. He topped his previous best of ninth at the HBU Husky Invitational last week.
Redshirt freshman Emmett Oh tied for 12th after shooting a 72 in Tuesday's final round. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, native tied with Stephen F. Austin's Bradley Phelps at 217 over 54 holes.
Like Scobie, Oh earned his best career finish Tuesday, besting his previous high of 35 at the HBU Husky Invitational.
With only two student-athletes competing, the Cougars were not eligible for the team title. Host Sam Houston State won the team title with a score of 845 to finish 24 strokes ahead of Abilene Christian. Oral Roberts (872), Stephen F. Austin (873) and Tyler Junior College (875) rounded out the top-five leaders.
Individually, Sam Houston State teammates Zach Cabra and Albert Miner went 1-2 with scores of 204 and 207, respectively. Scott Newell of Oral Roberts finished third at 208, while Abilene Christian's Corbin Renner finished one stroke ahead of Scobie.
Following the Sam Houston State/Harold Funston Invitational, the Cougars will take several months off from their schedule before opening the spring season on Feb. 21-23 at its own Bayou City Collegiate Championship at Redstone Golf Club.
