PEARLAND, Texas -- University of Houston junior Matt Williams posted consecutive 71s Monday to lead the Cougars and tie for ninth after the first day at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic.
Competing on the 7,272-yard, par-72 layout at Golfcrest Country Club, Williams overcame a bogey on No. 6 in his First Round to drain four birdies on the next six holes.
In the afternoon session, Williams started his Second Round with a birdie on No. 3 and rebounded from a bogey on No. 6 with another birdie on No. 7. Despite a double bogey on the 594-yard, par-5 10th hole, the Calgary, Alberta, native closed his day with two birdies on his final three holes.
This marked the fourth and fifth straight rounds in 2017-18 in which Williams shot 71. He opened the year with three straight rounds of 71 at The Jackrabbit on Oct. 1-3 in Valentine, Neb.
Arkansas State held the team lead with a score of 7-under 569. No. 30 Lipscomb stood in second at 570 with Sam Houston State (574) and UTSA rounding out the top-four leaders.
Individually, Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong opened the tournament with a 67 and held the lead at 7-under 137. Tanner Napier (Arkansas State), Bryce Dooley (Abilene Christian), Zander Lozano (UTSA), Jake McCrory (Sam Houston State) and Gray Townsend (SMU) were tied for second at 140.
Senior and 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships medalist Michael Perras and sophomore Zach Tracy each posted consecutive rounds of even-par 72 to tie for 15th at 144. Senior Papito Gonzalez was tied for 29th at 146.

FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS
The Final Round tees off at 8 a.m., Tuesday. Houston will compete in groups with student-athletes from SMU and UTSA and begins at 8:45 a.m., off No. 1.
Frances starts the day for the Cougars at 8:45 a.m., with Gonzalez (8:54 a.m.), Tracy (9:03 a.m.), Perras (9:12 a.m.) and Williams (9:21 a.m.) following.
Gil leads the Houston individuals at 9:39 a.m., off No. 10 with De Bondt (9:48 a.m.) and Gardner (9:57 a.m.) following.
Following the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, the Cougars compete at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. That two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played Oct. 23-24 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas.
