Golf Adds Redstone Challenge to Spring Schedule

The University of Houston men's golf team completed its fall schedule with a fourth-place finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. The Cougars fired a 2-over-par team score of 286 in the third round to end the tournament with a total score of 845 (-7) on the par 71-6,633-yard course.

Colorado State won the tournament with an overall score of 841 (-11), while Pacific finished one shot back and Saint Mary's finished in third place with a score of 844 (-8). Houston and UC-Irvine tied for fourth place, while San Jose State finished in sixth place with a team score of 848 and Arizona finished in seventh place with a score of 853. The host school, Long Beach State, ended the tournament in eighth place (857), while UT-San Antonio and UC-Santa Barbara rounded out the top 10 teams.

Junior college transfer Brady Shivers enjoyed his best finish as a Cougar with a fourth-place showing. Shivers shot a 2-under-par score of 69 (his career best at UH) in the first and third rounds and finished with a 4-under-par total of 209.

Jordan Irwin finished in a four-way tie for 16th place after shooting three-over-par in the final round and ended the tournament with a three-round even-par total of 213.

Jackie Lindsey had his best outing at UH as he tied Irwin, Robert McCrae of Saint Mary's and Kurt Nino of San Francisco with an even par score.

Ben Moser rebounded in the final round to post a one-under-par score of 70 after shooting 4-over in the second round. Moser ended the tournament tied for 35th place with a 4-over-par total of 217.

Steven Frazier fired a 7-over-par total of 78 in the third round and ended the tournament tied for 38th place one shot back. Frazier posted the best single round score of his career with a three-under-par 68 in the second round and shot 1-over-par in the opening round.

 

 

Arizona's Robert Galletti was the individual champion after he tied the second-best score in tournament history with a 9-under-par score 204. Galletti posted a 4-under-par score of 67 in the final round. San Jose State's Stephen Stallworth and Bruce Hanstad of Colorado State tied for second place with a 5-under-par total of 208. They were one shot better than Shivers, Alex Johnson of Pacific and John Chin of UC-Irvine, who tied for fourth place.

Houston will play at the GADO North Texas Classic in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on Feb. 17-18 before hosting the All-American Intercollegiate Tournament on Feb. 25-26 on the Tradition Course at Cypresswood. The Cougars also are the host school for the Border Olympics Golf Tournament on Mar. 14-15.
