Golf Finishes Second at Del Walker Intercollegiate

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Pablo Acuna fired a 3-under-par 68 for the second straight day Friday to finish in third place with a score of 206 and help lead the University of Houston golf team to a second-place showing at the Del Walker Intercollegiate. The Cougars ended the two-day tournament with a score of 848 and were one of only two teams to break par. Sophomore Jordan Irwin posted his second straight round of even-par 71 on the 6,631-course at Virginia Country Club and tied with Colorado State's Zen Brown at 4-under-par 209. Other Cougars in action Friday were senior Kevin Newman (217, t-24th), senior Zach Mowbray 219, t-30th) and junior Ricky Romano (221, t-38th). Lamar won the team championship with a 54-hole total of 831 after recording the lowest round of the day for the second straight day. Washington State (853), Colorado State (856), Long Beach State (868) and UTEP (868) rounded out the Top Five team leaders. Lamar's Dawie VanDerWalt captured medallist honors at 9-under-par 204 to finish a stroke ahead of Kansas' Gary Woodland. The Cougars return to action Monday when they compete at the Battle of the Bend, hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette at Cypress Bend Golf Club in Many, La. TEAM LEADERBOARD
