Golf in 11th Place at Long Beach State Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. - After a month-long break, the University of Houston golf team returned to action and stood in 11th place Thursday through the first two rounds of the Del Walker Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

The tournament concludes Friday morning with the final 18 holes on the par-71 course at Virginia Country Club.

Freshman Ricky Romano and sophomore Zach Mowbray led the Cougars during the first day with scores of 3-over-par 145 in Thursday's action. Romano fired a 1-over-par 72 in the morning round for his best score of the day, while Mowbray was one stroke better with an even-par 71.

Other Cougars competing at the event were Denton Walker (73-76 - 149, t-45th), Jordan Hasbrouck (78-74 - 152, t-59th) and Blake Parks (75-77 - 152, t-59th).

Long Beach State stood atop the team leaderboard with a team score of 570 through the first two rounds. The 49ers placed two shots ahead of Texas-San Antonio and five strokes in front of UC Riverside. Lamar, Arizona, Cal Poly, San Jose State, UC Santa Barbara, Pacific and North Texas rounded out the Top 10 team leaders.

Individually, Lamar's Chris Stroud stood in first place at 11-under-par 131. Bret Lederer of Long Beach State was in second place at 133.
