Golf to Host Redstone Challenge this Weekend

Feb. 10, 2004

HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team opens its 2004 spring season Wednesday at the Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Kona, Hawai'i.

The three-day event begins with 18 holes on Wednesday morning and continues through Friday.

This will be the first action for the Cougars since recording an 11th-place finish at the Del Walker Intercollegiate on Nov. 6-7. UH competed in four tournaments during the fall campaign.

Head coach Vince Jarrett begins his first spring season with the Cougars after a stellar 19-year career at Abilene Christian. Through the first four tournaments of the fall campaign, Jarrett led the Cougars to a pair of Top 10 team finishes, including a second-place showing at the season-opening Mean Green Classic on Sept. 15-16.

Freshman Ricky Romano leads the Cougars with a 73.2 scoring average through 12 rounds this season, but it is a slim advantage as senior co-captain Denton Walker is only one total stroke behind. Both Walker and Romano are the only Cougars who have seen every individual round count towards the team score in each of the first 12 rounds.

Sophomore co-captain Zach Mowbray, junior transfer Jordan Hasbrouck and sophomore Kevin Newman are also scheduled to compete at the tournament.

A year ago, the Cougars finished fourth in a 26-team field at the Intercollegiate. John Wine finished fourth at that event after shooting 208, including a 68 in the final round.
