HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team opens its 2009 spring season Monday when it competes during the Ninth Annual Rice Intercollegiate presented by Srixon at Westwood Golf Club in southwest Houston.

The 54-hole event begins at 8:30 a.m., Monday with a shotgun start and concludes with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.

The Cougars are part of a 15-team field, which includes teams from every time zone in the continental United States. UH joins host Rice, NC State, Pacific, Louisiana-Lafayette, San Francisco, Liberty, Houston Baptist, Winthrop, Northern Colorado, Nebraska, William and Mary, Connecticut, Missouri State, and Texas Southern.

Senior captain Ben Moser, junior Beau Davis, sophomore Matt Eschenburg, junior Jackie Lindsey and sophomore Clark Mitzner are scheduled to compete for the Cougars in the season-opening event.

Through the first three tournaments in the fall, Moser leads the Cougars with a 72.7 scoring average, while Lindsey ranks second with a score of 75.3

This will be the first of two tournaments for the Cougars in the spring in the city of Houston. Following the Rice Intercollegiate, UH plays host to the All-American Intercollegiate/George Thorn on Feb. 23-24, on the Tradition course of Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring.
