HOUSTON - University of Houston junior Roman Robledo was honored Wednesday evening as the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week after winning his second title of the 2013-14 campaign.
Robledo fired three consecutive rounds in the 60s - including a final-round 66 - to win the individual title at the Cougars' own Bayou City Collegiate Championship last weekend at the Golf Club of Houston. He became only the 10th player in school history to shoot 66 or better in the third round or later of a tournament, joining current teammate Kyle Pilgrim.
After bogeying two of his first four holes to start the tournament, the Harlingen, Texas, native played the final 68 holes without a similar blemish on his scorecard. It was Robledo's third tournament title in his last seven tournaments.
This season, Robledo leads the Cougars with a 71.33 scoring average and 10 rounds of par or better, including four in the 60s.
Robledo has helped lead the Cougars into the top-15 national rankings by Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarain and soared into No. 44 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarain individual rankings.
Robledo and his Houston teammates return to action Sunday when they tee off in the First Round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. The three-day, 54-hole event runs through Tuesday with 18 holes played each day at Querence Golf Club in Querencia, Los Cabos, Mexico.
