Houston Set to Host Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas – The University of Houston Men’s Golf program returns to action when it plays host to the Border Olympics beginning Friday morning at Laredo Country Club.

Teams will play 36 holes Monday with an 8 a.m., shotgun start with the final 18 holes teeing off on the 7,375-yard, par-72 course.

Under the leadership of Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, the Cougars’ starting lineup will feature seniors Michael Perras and Papito Gonzalez, junior Matt Williams and sophomores Pryce Beshoory and Zach Tracy.

Sophomore George Gardner, redshirt freshman Andy Gibson and freshman Alexander Frances will compete as an individuals.

For Friday’s play, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Campbell, Arkansas State and Sam Houston State.

Perras will lead the Cougars off No. 1 with Beshoory (first group off No. 2), Gonzalez (second group off No. 2), Tracy (No. 3) and Williams (No. 4) following. Gardner begins the tournament off No. 17 with Frances (first group off No. 18) and Gibson (second group off No. 18) following.

The Cougars will compete as part of a 15-team field. Houston will face Campbell, Arkansas State, Sam Houston State, UTSA, McNeese, ULM, Little Rock, Western Kentucky, New Mexico State, Stephen F. Austin, Louisiana, Bowling Green State, Oral Roberts, UT Rio Grande Valley, Houston Baptist, Lamar, Texas A&M International.
The Cougars finished 14th at the prestigious Querencia Cabo Collegiate at Querencia Golf Club. The tournament features 12 of the nation’s top-50 programs.

Perras posted a 1-under 70 to lead the Cougars in the Final Round, while Tracy tied for 16th at 215 as Houston’s leading competitor.

Following the Border Olympics, the Cougars will host the Valspar Collegiate Championships on March 18-20 at Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.

From there, the team will travel to compete at the 3M Augusta Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., on April 1-2.
