PALM CITY, Fla. –The University of Houston Men’s Golf program plays host to one of the nation’s elite collegiate fields when it tees off at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Sunday morning at Floridian National Golf Club.
The elite tournament features four of the nation’s top-20 and nine of top-50 programs, including the Cougars, who check in at No. 49 in the latest Golfstat national poll.
Teams open play at 12:15 p.m. (CDT) Sunday with a shotgun start for the First Round. The tournament continues at 8 a.m. (CDT) Monday with a split-tee start for the Second Round and concludes at 7 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday with a split-tee start.

The Cougars square off against No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 12 LSU, No. 14 Texas A&M, No. 18 Texas, No. 23 Arkansas, No. 27 Georgia Tech, No. 30 Florida, No. 33 South Carolina, Memphis, Minnesta, North Texas and USF.
Michael Perras – Leads Cougars with 71.04 average and five rounds in the 60s and tied for team lead with 13 rounds of par or better… Has posted top-7 finishes in two of his last three tournaments… Tied for fourth with score of 6-under 138 in rain shortened Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club (March 10-11.)… Tied for seventh at 4-under 212 to lead the Cougars at the All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola at Golf Club of Houston (Feb. 17-19)… Was the 2016 NCAA Franklin Regional individual champion at 16-under 200 at Vanderbilt Legends Club… Native of Deer Park, Texas, and product of Deer Park High School.
Papito Gonzalez – Second among Cougars with 71.30 average and tied for team lead with 13 rounds of par or better … Tied for eighth at Bayou City Collegiate Classic at 1-under 215… Opened that tournament with consecutive sub-par rounds… Opened Maui Jim Intercollegiate with career-low 67 and followed with 70… Led Cougars and tied for 13th at 5-under 208 on Sept. 23-25… Native of McAllen, Texas, and product of Memorial High School.
Zach Tracy –Fourth on team with 71.88 average but stand third with 11 rounds of par or better… Enjoyed top-11 finishes in his last two tournaments… Fired three straight sub-par rounds to tie for third at 4-under 212 at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring (Feb. 27-28)… Made his collegiate debut a memorable one… Posted three straight rounds of par or better at Bayou City Collegiate Classic to lead Cougars and tie for fifth at 2-under 214 at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas... Sat out as a redshirt with the Cougars in 2015-16… Native of Houston and product of Seven Lakes High School.
Matt Williams – Third among Cougars with 71.82 average and adds six rounds of par or better… Tied for eighth at the rain-shortened Border Olympics with score of 4-under 140 at Laredo Country Club (March 10-11)… Opened that tournament with a 69… Posted a career-low-tying 68 in the Second Round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate (Sept. 24, 2016).
Pryce Beshoory –72.57 average with five rounds of par or better… Opened and closed Royal Oaks Intercollegiate with sub-par rounds and tied for 21st at 215 (Oct. 24-25)… Native of Pearland, Texas, and product of Lutheran South Academy… Member of Pearland Little League team, which finished fourth at 2010 Little League World Series.
Tony Gil – Competing as individual… 72.63 average with four rounds of par or better… Began Colin Montgomerie Invitational at 71-69 and finished fifth with score of 3-under 213 at Cypresswood Golf Club (Feb. 27-28)… Opened collegiate career with score of 222 at Bayou City Collegiate Classic to tie for 39th at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland, Texas… Closed that tournament with a 70… Native of Vaughan, Ontario, and product of Northview Heights Secondary School.
Matt Scobie – Competing as individual… Three-year letterman… Posted a 74.00 average with four rounds of par or better this season… Tied for 19th at the All-American Intercollegiate presented by Coca-Cola with score of 1-under 215. … Native of Ajax, Ontario, Canada and product of Ajax High School.
Logan Davis – Competing as individual… 73.25 average with five rounds of par or better… Tied for ninth at Royal Oaks Intercollegiate with score of 3-under 210 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas (Oct. 24-25, 2016)… Fired three straight rounds of par or better at that tournament… Native of Humble, Texas, and product of Atascocita High School
Carson Cavner – Competing as individual… 79.33 average… Making his spring debut… Competing at Valspar Collegiate Invitational for second straight season… Tied for 78th at Colin Montgomerie Invitational at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, Texas (Feb. 26-28)… Native of Jupiter, Fla., and product of The Pine School.

The Cougars posted sub-par rounds on the way to a score of 12-under 564 to finish second at the rain-shortened Border Olympics on March 10-11 at Laredo Country Club.
A YEAR AGO
Texas captured the team title with a score of 855 to finish five strokes ahead of LSU at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational. Texas A&M and Oklahoma State tied for third at 871, while South Carolina and Illinois tied for fifth at 874.
Individually, LSU’s Zach Wright earned medalist honors, defeating Texas A&M’s Chandler Phillips on the first hole of a playoff after both players finished 72 holes at 2-under 211.
Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, the Cougars host their fifth and final tournament of the season at the Valspar Intercollegiate, set for March 19-21 at Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
From there, the team competes at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate on March 25-28, at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Charleston, S.C.
